Indie Developer Interview – John Roo (Quest Arrest)

Indie Developer Interview – John Roo (Quest Arrest)

As you no doubt know if you follow me or Roo on twitter, earlier in the year he released a game for the Game Boy called Quest Arrest. A RPG style game where you take control of Detective Allison Bennett as you try to rid your city, Strange Meadows from the clutches of evil crime boss Athena.

I already had a very ‘behind the curtains’ article with Roo back in February here – http://budgetnostalgia.com/?p=253 so if you want to catch up with that article and the video interview it’s linked in there as well. Consider this a part 2 now that the game has been released.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some more questions, there is so much to talk about!

Last time we did the interview you were only planning to release on web player, a rom file and a physical release. Since then you’ve released on Vox Pop?, Google Play and working on others. What made you develop further for other platforms?

Thanks for having me. I really appreciate it I definitely ported the game to other platforms out of the curiosity of how far I could take it. I wanted to see how many platforms I could actually port to. I would love to be able to have my game available to as many people as possible, and the best way to do that is to have the option of playing on as many devices as possible. It was not only a personal test, but also the idea of wanting to bring joy to more people if I can. Plus I want future games that I make to be ported in as many places as possible.

Since the initial release you updated the game a few times. What can people expect who haven’t had a chance to play the updated version?

The biggest surprise would be a few entirely added scenes. It gives for a longer gameplay experience. That along with some bugs being slowly worked out of the game. You will definitely get a new experience out of the newer version of the game with those added scenes.

Now that everything has officially arrived to the Retro Room can we expect to have them on our doorsteps anytime soon?

Absolutely. The Quest Arrest Physical sale is happening soon. I hope you are ready 😉

Early revision of the cart label

Is there anything different from the latest rom you released and the physical release?

No difference. You wont be missing out on anything. You will in fact have a different experience if you played older versions of the rom or webplayer.

Most importantly when, where and how can we purchase the physical edition?

There will be links posted all over Twitter, Facebook, and itch.io… I will be sure to get it in the hands of anyone who is looking for it.

So you mentioned something big on Monday, do we get any hints?

*cough cough something to do with the physical release *cough cough haha

Is this we will see from Bennett and her story or is there something else in the pipeline?

Detective Bennett’s story is just getting started. There will be more.

Do you have any plans to celebrate the launch?

I plan to release a video of something very very cool that I have been working on.. Be sure  to stay tuned to @QuestArrest or @TheRetroRoomRoo on Twitter or Facebook so you don’t miss out on the announcement! Thanks so much for having me Elmo, I really appreciate the support. Thanks for helping with everything you have and being such an amazing human in general.

Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me about the game. And for the readers here’s a little preview for tomorrow. Don’t worry it’ll be worth the wait.
